Dying to live

Every week, Palestinians are taken by Israeli forces from their homes, workplace, schools and at checkpoints. Sometimes the detained are released after a few days, after a few weeks, or remain in captivity indefinitely. Almost every Palestinian home has at least one member who has gone through the imprisonment experience or is still serving an unjust sentence. Since resistance is an integral right for all Palestinians, Palestinians held in Israeli prisons have also found their way of resisting.

Not a Friendly Game: Sidelined by the World Cup, Natal; Brazil

A  photo story by Anne Paq documenting the struggle of some inhabitants of Natal, from the Nordeste region, in Brazil as they come under threat of being displaced because of the upcoming 2014 World Cup. Across the country, between 150,000 and 170,000 people will be displaced because of the World Cup. In Natal only, more than 1,000 persons and more than 100 businesses will be affected, for the sake of only 4 football games due to be held in the city. As in other cities affected by the World Cup, people in Natal threatened with expropriation of their land or eviction are mobilizing.

Public Housing in Israel 2012

The late Moshe Silman burned himself to death at a social justice demonstration that took place on July 14, 2012, in protest of his housing problems. In his suicide letter he elucidated his act by announcing: "I will not by homeless", and blamed the state for years of neglect and abuse. The mainstream media approach to his act was to embrace the government and prime minister Binyamin Netanyahu's motto claiming that "this was a personal tragedy". We, the Activestills Collective together with the "Public Housing Forum", went out to show that this is a "national tragedy" by photographing over 40 families from different cities across the country, which we found to be the "tip of the iceberg". In a worrisome economic roll down that Israel is facing, these are the people that are first to pay the price for the deliberate abolishment of welfare policies.
